Chapel

Virtual tour of the 3D architectural modeling of the 14th century chapel of the Sorbonne

The Service in charge of Digital Infrastructures and Innovation in the Sorbonne (SIRIS) presents the reconstruction project of the medieval chapel of the Sorbonne college, dating from the 14th century and destroyed in the 17th century, in virtual reality.

The current Sorbonne chapel was erected between 1635 and 1642 on the initiative of the cardinal de Richelieu, according to the plans of the architect Jacques Lemercier. A Gothic chapel, built in the 14th century pre-existed this construction. If it was destroyed to do make way for this new classical-style building, a mark on the ground of the main courtyard of the Sorbonne today evokes its original layout. The image of the early church, heart of the Sorbonne in the past, thus remains constantly present in the Sorbonne today.

In order to go further in the promotion of this medieval heritage, the Service in charge of digital and innovation infrastructures in the Sorbonne (SIRIS) has set itself the goal of virtually reconstructing the old chapel of the Sorbonne college. During 2019, an architect commissioned by SIRIS, Paul Segault, initiated an architectural study of the monument on the basis of documents relating to the excavations, which enabled him to draw numerous clues about its appearance.

In 2020, this research enabled the architect to provide an artist’s view of this chapel, which has disappeared for almost four centuries. This artist’s view took the form of a virtual tour using Virtual Reality (VR) technology implemented by GREZ Productions, a production and production company for 3D models and animations.
